Fluid Painter is a Blender addon based on Geometry Nodes, which makes it easy to quickly add organic looking, fluids-like geometry to existing meshes. For example, you could add honey to a pancake model, or mud to any surface that needs to appear dirty.
As the name “Fluid Painter” suggests, you can paint the fluids directly in the viewport and have them appear exactly as you intended. This approach is much easier to art-direct and it is more performant than traditional Fluid Simulation based on particles or volumes.
Strengths and Limitations
Keep in mind that this tool excels in the visualization of viscous fluids (wax, thick honey, soft chocolate or caramel, etc.) and is not suitable for "thin" and splashing liquids like water, juice, wine, etc. For more watery simulations, I’d still recommend using Blender’s native Mantaflow (which is capable though finicky) or the excellent Flip Fluids addons.
Also, the addon is not meant to produce complex fluid animations. However, the Geometry Nodes are cleverly designed to create an illusion of natural movement and flow in the painted fluid.
Additional Parameters and Effects
After painting, the results can be tweaked and enhanced using a variety of Geometry Nodes parameters. This enables advanced effects such as merging and connecting between close-by fluids of the same type.
The final output created with this addon is simple geometry. Once the Geometry Nodes modifier has been applied, the scene can be exported to other 3D applications.
In terms of rendering, Fluid Painter addon works with both Eevee and Cycles.
